Facebook to add a ‘subscribe’ button for Pages?

Last year Facebook added a feature to our profile pages whereby people could subscribe to your updates without being a friend of yours.  It's a nice feature, especially if you're someone that tends to produce or share good content that people would like to follow without actually being a friend of yours.  Of course Facebook haven't yet released the ability to share content with just your subscribers, but that's for another blog.

Todays blog is about a new feature Facebook appear to be rolling out whereby you can subscribe to a Page without actually liking it.  It appears to be an extension of the interest lists feature that they launched earlier this year.  This allowed people to subscribe to a Pages content without liking it.  Before now however it hasn't been all that easy to find, which is something that can't be said about the new subscribe button.

Here is a screenshot of the new feature from Marketing Land reader Craig Smith:

Whilst I can understand why this functionality exists for personal profiles as it allows people to see what you share publically without really having access to your full profile, I'm not sure I understand the benefits of it for a Page.  After all, I can't imagine many Pages would want to send out updates in private, so they won't have the two levels of content that make the two levels of subscription any use.  Likewise I really can't imagine any Page owners turning down a like from someone in the same way that you would a friend request.

So this one very much falls into the wait and see camp for me to see if a real use for it emerges.  What can you see this feature being used for?
