Google Glass has been making headlines since its launch, but arguably the most valuable application of the technology was performed this week, with the very first live stream of a medical operation delivered via Google Glass.

The stream was delivered to a colleague and his students on the 21st August, with a routine ACL surgey at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center broadcast online by Dr Christopher Kaeding.

“To be honest, once we got into the surgery, I often forgot the device was there,” Kaeding said. “It just seemed very intuitive and fit seamlessly.”

The broadcast was delivered via a Google Hangout, with Dr Kaeding’s colleague Dr Robert Magnussen tuning in from the comfort of his office, along with a select band of students.

“To have the opportunity to be a medical student and share in this technology is really exciting,” said Ryan Blackwell, a second-year medical student who witnessed the procedure. “This could have huge implications, not only from the medical education perspective, but because a doctor can use this technology remotely, it could spread patient care all over the world in places that we don’t have it already.”

Suffice to say this offers up some pretty cool implications for the future of teaching surgery, but also for allowing surgeons and doctors to gain insight from colleagues wherever they may be in the world.
