I’ve explored previously whether entrepreneurship is something that can be effectively taught, and indeed on the best ways to teach it. Whilst it comes across as one of those things that is best learned by doing, a recent study suggests that there is not really any difference between experience based learning or class based learning.
So, it should be of great interest to any budding entrepreneurs out there that a new online postgraduate course in the topic has been launched on the FutureLearn MOOC platform by Deakin and Coventry universities.
The course has been designed to ensure maximum participation from students around the world, and aims to draw on research, teaching and practical know-how from faculty at both universities. The course is driven by a combination of employability and digital innovation.
Deakin are well established in this niche, having been the first university in the world to offer a fully online postgraduate course back in 2017, again on FutureLearn.
The course, which will cost approximately £5,000, will allow students to be awarded a Graduate Certificate from Deakin University, and a Postgraduate Certificate from Coventry University. The course will offer free tasters in January 2019, with full, fee-paying commencement happening in May 2019. The course will be 4 modules long, with an estimated time for completion of 1 year part-time.
The future of learning
Deakin believe that this collaboration marks the future of postgraduate education, with platforms like Future Learn providing global reach and giving students access to high quality researchers and practitioners from around the world.
“The course is designed to ensure students network with their peers – in the digital economy, their communities and future customers will be global,” they say. “At Deakin, we are committed to providing the best possible learning experience and outcomes to our students, wherever they are in the world. We share this value with Coventry University and this has been made clear by the new partnership.”
It also marks the latest step in this direction from Coventry University, who were the first British university to offer a fully online postgraduate degree last year. By partnering with the Australian university however to offer a joint qualification, it takes this one step further.
“At Coventry, we are committed to offering the very best learning experience to our students, wherever they are in the world. This new way of working means we can offer that significant international learning experience to even more people in our communities,” Coventry University say.
It will be interesting to see if this is a model that is replicated by other universities in the coming years.
