Good Support Ensures Expats Remain Productive

A study from Finland’s University of Vaasa underscores the importance of well-being in the job performance and retention of expatriates. According to the research, strong organizational support and favorable working conditions can enhance expatriates’ well-being, leading to better performance and lower turnover rates. Conversely, challenging environments and clashes between work and personal life can diminish well-being, increase stress, and push expatriates to consider leaving their assignments early.

The study highlights several factors that shape the expatriate experience, including job autonomy, social support, and work-life balance. Expatriates who feel a sense of purpose in their roles and experience strong support from their organizations tend to stay more engaged and productive. However, those facing social isolation or difficult living conditions often struggle to perform at their best.

“By addressing these factors, companies can boost expatriate retention, satisfaction, and performance,” the author notes.

A common challenge

As international assignments grow more common, particularly in business, global companies are increasingly reliant on expatriates for overseas operations. Yet working abroad, while rewarding, can lead to burnout if well-being needs aren’t prioritized. Early identification of burnout risks and offering support and flexibility are crucial for fostering a productive international workforce.

Aligning assignments with expatriates’ personal values and creating an inclusive workplace can significantly enhance well-being. Expatriates themselves can benefit by evaluating the fit and meaning of an overseas role before accepting it.

“By prioritizing well-being, companies not only retain top talent but also cultivate a more engaged, socially responsible workforce,” the study concludes, emphasizing that supporting expatriates benefits both the organization and broader society.
