The research, which analyzed 32 studies from nine countries, found that time off is vital for dealing with rising work stress and demands. Yet many people avoid taking breaks, worried it might harm their career or make them seem less committed. This mindset, the researchers argue, is flawed.

“We think working nonstop makes us more productive,” they say. “But taking care of ourselves actually helps us perform better. We need periods of deep rest to balance intense work.”

How to Make a Vacation Count

Not all time off is equally restorative. The study found that the biggest well-being boosts come when people fully disconnect from work during their vacations. “If you’re answering emails or thinking about the office, you’re not really away,” the researchers explain.

The most restorative vacations also include physical activity, whether it’s a hike, snorkeling, or anything else that gets your heart rate up. These activities not only improve physical and mental health but also create joyful, one-of-a-kind experiences that daily life often lacks.

Longer Breaks, Bigger Benefits

The study also found that longer vacations deliver greater benefits, but they can make returning to work feel tougher. To ease this transition, the researchers suggest giving yourself time before and after your trip. Planning ahead reduces stress, while taking a day or two to settle back in after returning can make the shift to work mode smoother.

The takeaway is simple: Real rest isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. By unplugging completely and staying active during your vacation, you’ll return healthier, happier, and better equipped to handle the demands of modern work.
