Why your Facebook page is liked

Everyone wants a lot of people to like their Facebook page right?  But what is the motivating factor behind someone choosing to click that button?  A new study by social analytics company Crowd Science attempts to shed some light on it all.

They found that the most popular reasons for liking a Facebook page were:

  1. to show support
  2. because they enjoyed the content being shared

All of which kinda makes sense, but what is interesting is that being kept abreast of product offerings is not high on the agenda for Facebook users.  These findings chime nicely with my blog yesterday that advertising doesn't work on Facebook because that's not what people are there for.  You wouldn't try to sell at a dinner party, so don't try and sell on Facebook.

Along with the relatively low interest in Liking brand Pages, only six percent of those surveyed Liked Facebook pages for deals and sweepstakes.

As the age of the user increases, the interest in keeping abreast of product offers and company activity decreases, according to the study. Only one percent of respondents 65-years or older were reported to have Liked brand items to keep informed about the brands.

Check out their infographic below, and add a comment on what encourages you or your 'fans' to like content on Facebook.

  1. Interesting that bottom of the tree are commercial reasons, ie getting discounts and entering sweepstakes. Just goes to show that people really are on social media to interact, not to buy.

  2. In this survey of over 60,000 people taken straight from Facebook’s corporate Fan Page, you can see that the overwhelming reason behind why people follow a fan page is because “Your friends have liked it”. In fact, nearly four times as many as the second best response of “To explore common interests” – which still indicates that people liked a page because a friend did first.
