When is a park not a park?

Maybe when it’s being carried around on the front of a bike?  The World Health Organisation recently declared that there are more of us living in cities than in rural areas for the first time, which is something that has clearly prompted Parkcycle into action.

Dismayed by the lack of green spaces in our cities, they have attempted to provide modular parks that can be wheeled from place to place on the front of a bicycle, thus allowing them to spontaneously emerge wherever demand requires a bit of greenery.

Each slab of greenery is around the size of a road lane and can be connected up to a bike and wheeled to its location.  The platform comes with real grass and usually a bit of shrubbery such as a tree or a bush, thus allowing 2-3 people to enjoy a piece of greenery.  As with most modular designs, the slabs can easily be joined together to create a bigger green space.

Whilst I’m all for slotting as much greenery into our often grey and drab urban environments, I’m not sure the Parkcycle really does the job.  It’s no doubt an interesting concept but I’d be surprised to see them cropping up in the great cities of the world any time soon.
