The golf shoes that provide coaching support

iofitThe last few years have seen a boom in wearable devices that go above and beyond simply recording how far you’ve run or cycled.  The latest devices use a range of AI algorithms to provide you with live feedback on your performance, whether it’s on your level of fatigue or even your dehydration levels.

An interesting subset of this performance market is a range of wearable devices that provide feedback on your technique as you perform.  For instance, the Carv device provides such feedback for skiers, and special courts provide this feedback for both tennis and table tennis players alike.

Smart swing

The latest device of this ilk aims to provide smart coaching to golfers looking to improve their game.  IOFIT has been developed by a spinout from Samsung and consists of a golf shoe that does some clever things to help us with our swing.

The shoes connect up wirelessly with a smartphone and therefore allow the player to record all aspects of their swing, and of course share this with their peers or coach.  What’s more, the app also allows comparisons to be made between yourself and others.

In terms of data, the shoes record the weight distribution between each foot, and also the power generated by the swing itself.

A nice feature is that this data can then be translated into a video so that the player can see an animated visualization of their swing.

The data itself is collected from a number of pressure sensors built into the sole of the shoe.

The project is currently raising money on Kickstarter, with the aim being that it will enter the marketplace in February 2017, with a number of sizes and colors offered to users.

It’s an interesting addition to the growing number of services that provide advanced coaching to amateur athletes at an affordable level.  Check out the video below to see IOFIT in action.
