2016 Christmas lectures – part 3 (Self-organization is not enough)

For the final lecture in this Christmas series, I wanted to touch on some of the responses to change.  The first two lectures both looked at some of the major changes the world is seeing at the moment, and this can make things seem rather daunting.

There has been a lot written in the business press about responses such as Holocracy and other self-organizing approaches to management.

As the point of these lectures is to provoke a slightly tangential look at the world we live in, I’ve chosen for this final lecture a talk given by UC Berkeley’s Terrence Deacon in which he suggests that we need to go beyond ‘mere’ emergence and look more deeply at how things really work, with consciousness itself the focal point of his analysis.
