Do Robots Need More Appreciation Of LGBTQs?

As robots start to interact and engage with humans more frequently, and in more depth, it’s perhaps understandable that a greater understanding of the human condition, with all of its foibles, will help the machines work effectively alongside us.  Does this extend to understanding bias and discrimination, and if so, how far does it need to extend?

A new paper from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology explores whether robots need to have knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues, and whether this should be programmed into their development.

“It is imperative that we construct mechanisms and policies that acknowledge the importance of inclusivity, diversity, and non-discrimination, also for the LGBTQ+ community in the development and use of robots and AI,” the researchers say.

They remind us that technology such as robotics is never created in a vacuum, and tends to reflect the societal values, beliefs and biases of humans.  The paper highlights the lack of LGBTQ+ voices and perspectives in the robotics community, and this under-representation can lead to issues for the sector.

The authors urge greater inclusion of LGBTQ+ perspectives in the development of robotic technology, and for this to be recognized in both the research and design of the technology in future so that the machines that increasingly work among us are inclusive.

It follows similar moves a couple of years ago to eliminate gender bias from the development of AI and robotic technologies.  The move was led by CognitionX co-founder Tabitha Goldstaub, who was alarmed at the potential for gender bias in modern technology.

“When you look at what’s going on in AI with a feminist cap on, it becomes very apparent that the biases that already exist in society will be exacerbated or reinforced,” she said. “As soon as I realised this, my antennae pricked up and I thought, ‘Someone needs to be keeping an eye on this’.”
